Did you know? Wilbert Awdry, author of the Thomas the Tank Engine book series, and his brother George scanned maps of the British Isles for a suitable location for the Thomas & Friends stories to take place, but couldn’t find one. One summer Wilbert went on holiday to the Isle of Man. He discovered that the Bishop in charge was called the Bishop of Sodor and Man. (Historically, Sodor refers to the Sudderies, part of South-West Scotland). So he and George decided to restore the other half of the Bishop’s diocese and “discovered" the Island of Sodor, situated between the Isle of Man and the English mainland. |
